More Info About Caprica...
Jan 15 2009, 1:11 PM EST
Ronald Moore gave a pretty great interview about Caprica recently, which you can read here: http://www.thedeadbolt.com/news/105371/caprica_interview.php This could be *slightly* spoilerish, though I imagine we will learn much of this in promos leading up to the show. Do you find this valuable?

Thanks for the link to that. I guess my only question is 51 years seems like an awfully short time to go from no Cylons to what we saw in BG. I mean, they are very advanced and a lot has happened according to previous "info" we were given in BG.

That's what I thought, too. My assumption would be that advanced robotics already exists in the colonies 51 years prior to BSG, and that the creation of the first "Cylons" refers specifically to those robots first becoming sentient. Otherwise it seems like way too fast of a development curve.

Yes, I don't know if this is really the beginning of Cylons, just the beginning of the humanoid versions? That's what I thought when watching the previews. Do you find this valuable? |

Here's something else that nags at me: according what we've been told, the Cylons were created as labor-saving devices that essentially became robot slaves. They revolted, and there was a Cylon-Human war that lasted about a dozen years, when the Cylons suddenly "withdrew" (thanks to the intervention of the Final Five) and went off to live on their own and start making humanoid models.Fine. But if I read that correctly, it was the Centurion Cylons who first rebelled against the humans, right? Does anyone else find it incredibly improbable that the humans would build "labor-saving devices" that looked like menacing warrior machines (and call them "Centurions" to boot)? I didn't get how all of a sudden 50 years later from what they are saying Caprica is going to be like, we have what we had in BSG. I too thought they were just machines like the start of what we have today. Well said Green Arrow. Do you find this valuable? |

If I had to guess, based on the spoilers there, the F5 got/stole resurrection technology from Daniel Graystone's black project which implies to me the F5 utilized some kind of suspended animation method to survive their journey, waking in shifts to maintain their vessel. I have to wonder if Moore is going to write that the first 7 models were actually also survivors from the 13th Colony who didn't survive the trip, that they are recreated by the F5. Then there's the matter of this unseen One True God who obviously isn't a figment of any of the characters' imaginations, but a real force that messed with both Baltar's and Caprica Six's heads, gave visions (like the Opera House or the Pythian writings, among others) to numerous characters as shown in a number of episodes, brought Kara back from the crispy dead and even gave her a shiny new Viper (that every character on the show pretty much forgot about after Kara's return, which was really sloppy on Moore's part and it stuck in my craw all season). OTG's existence has to predate all the events before BSG, The Plan, Caprica, Fake Earth, even Kobol before The Fall. Perhaps its one of the Lords of Kobol, perhaps a sentient alien along a similar line as the Ancients or the Ori of the Stargate franchise.

I believe Ellen and Anders's recollections suggested that the Final Five traveled to the Colonies at great speed (with no FTL), so relativity came into play during their journey. While the Five of them aged only a few years (months? weeks?), on the Colonies and on Earth, thousands of years passed.Interesting that they were able to re-create resurrection, but not FTL travel (which the Centurions seemed to have no trouble developing...) 10. RE: Detailed Caprica Review DEAR GODS SPOILERS! ;)

Actually a few points from the last episodes got missed... The F5 (is it first 5 now? lol) developed resurrection technology on their earth. When their earth got nuked, they died and awoke in resurrection tanks because they had already set them up. They travelled across the grand distance in pre-FTL vehicles (because FTL didn't yet exist). They would age and die through the journey, each time resurrecting with knowledge of the current situation. Upon finding the human colonists in the midst of the cylon war (~30-40 yrs before BSG starts), they discover the robotic cylons developed by Daniel Graystone are experimenting with DNA from captured prisoners. Either by this time or shortly thereafter the 12 colonies had developed FTL drives. Graystone is responsible for the robotic cylons. Due to "work" he did to get the initial production model up and running, they contained personality, intelligence and a belief in the "one true god", setting up the religious warfare and the maliciousness aimed at the humans. They truly were "humanity's children", to quote Bill Adama from the miniseries. To end the war with the humans, the final/first 5 offered to further the cylon research into genetics by offering them the resurrection tanks and to assist them in creating humanoid forms to further their development. The robotic cylons saw this for a chance to further their cause and agreed, ceasing hostilities and retreating to their little corner of the galaxy. The five did their research, their children rebelled against them (or at least the leader of the children, John/Cavil) and they had their memories wiped and were dropped amongst the populace, setting up their lives as we knew them in BSG. Well, resurrection and FTL have nothing to do with each other. The Centurions were created to make war between the Colonies. No one said the Five resurrected while on their journey. It was probably only a few years from their perspective. Do you find this valuable? |
