Sol is also short for the name Solomon (like Saul, also a biblical name). But you're right -- Col. Tigh's first name is spelled like the New Testament evangelist, not the Old Testament king.

she called him Saul - I am deaf and read the closed captioning, it is, and always has been, Saul, never Sol.
