- Boomer is there at the resurrection tub as Cavil climbs out. He says that they have no idea of the threat that they have unleashed. Cavil looks over at an approaching Centurion.

Natalie tells the Centurion to escort him off off the ship and then adds "please" as the Centurion cocks its head. Kara tells Anders that she feel like she's watching herself and not really living. She adds that it's like her body is this alien thing. Tigh, Tyrol and Tory are meeting.

Cally is hidden [in a locker?] and hears Tigh says that the last thing that they need is for Cally to find out that there are a bunch of "skin jobs" running around and that her husband is one of them. Cally paces around, visibly upset. Tyrol has a head wound. Natalie crawls through a shower of sparks. Tory holds Nicky. Cally is bleeding from the side of her mouth. Tory, still holding Nicky, has a eerie look on her face and then she pushes a button. A second promo actually shows Cally taking a swing at Tyrol with a wrench.

Plot Summary

Well after last week's Cylon-centric episode, this week it's all about the Adamas, and we finally get to see what Lee joining the Quorum was all about. We also see the welcome return of one of everyone's favourite characters in the shape of Romo Lampkin--lawyer and cat lover extraordinaire.

As a kind of handover the episode starts with Natalie--Six being rushed to the operating room so that Doc Cottle can attempt to save her life; unfortunately for her Athena seems to have done a better job shooting her than Boomer did on the Old Man and she dies. Her death scene consists of her projecting a woodland canopy above her and interestingly ends with her reaching out for the Doc and him taking her hand as it fades to white. The Old Man and Saul look on as the Doctor works and Adama has Saul take Athena to his quarters so he can dispense punishment.

Intercut with the death scene we see the Quorum thrown into disarray at Roslin's disappearance, with Zarek giving the members a run down of the situation and announcing that he is taking over as president until the emergency is over. Unfortunately, the Admiral won't talk to Zarek and this leads Lee to give his father a call to persuade him otherwise--needless to say it doesn't work.

Athena then gets a dressing down from the Old Man, and is sent to the brig without Hera when Adama doesn't think her "she was going to kidnap my child, I saw it in a vision" excuse for shooting Natalie--Six is good enough. Seems to me that he's willing to believe some visions and not others but then who needs consistency?

Post-Credits we have the Admiral and Saul discussing fleet protection in the wake of half their birds and jocks being on board the base-ship at the time of its jump. We also learn that Starbuck has returned to the position of CAG after her trip on the Demetrius. Due to their limited resources the fleet is forced to bunch up to make protecting it easier.

Back with Lee, he is given a "I made you and look how you repay me" speech from Zarek as he is asking him to step down from the presidency in order to replace him with someone with whom the elder Adama will work. Lee has decided that they need to find someone else and then use the Quorum's emergency powers to put them in the presidency and he goes to the one man he thinks can help him--Romo Lampkin. Lampkin advises Lee "don't take the case councillor, it's a loser" but Lee being Lee he wont be dissuaded and persuades Romo to help him citing the fact that he's been in his room since the Baltar trial and could do with getting out more. Lampkin eventually agrees, but not without warning Lee that sometimes its better to stick with what you have got.

Back on Galactica, the Adama instructs Saul to see if the Cylon prisoner will tell them anything about the Hub, citing the fact that Saul has built up a "relationship" with her as his reason. Needless to say Saul looks suitably worried for a man who is having sex with the enemy. He does however dutifully go down to the holding cell and ask her about it. Six tells him that only the Hybrids can find the Hub ,and then only once the jumps are complete. However, whilst doing so, he lets slip that the president is important to the Old Man, much to Six's interest. Six then asks Saul if he loves her; however Saul sees Ellen asking him (personally I reckon he's projecting) ,but before he can answer. Condition One is set throughout the Ship and he is called away, but he does tell her that the mind games she is playing end here.

Condition One is set as one of the Raptors from the base-ship has jumped into range, Racetrack and Skulls head out to check it out and after Racetrack spacewalks over to it she discovers the body of a dead Pilot, Pike, inside the severely damaged ship. When the Raptor is brought aboard the Galatica the Admiral discovers the copy of Searider Falcon he learnt to the President before she went to the base-ship. The black-box of the Raptor tells them where it originated so Adama recalls the CAP and they jump out there leaving the fleet unguarded.

Meanwhile on Colonial One Lampkin is telling Lee the difficulty of the job he has set himself, pointing out that those who want political power are those least suited to wield it. Their discussion is cut short as Lampkin points out that Galactica is jumping away.

At the co-ordinates the Black-Box gave them, we find a debris field including Sandman's viper but no Sandman and bits of base-ship and resurrection hub. Saul then warns that he is way to close to this and that Roslin's base-ship has been destroyed. Adama seems determined to search the entire debris field and they detail 4 Raptors to continue the search and returns to the fleet.

Needless to say the Quorum is not happy about recent events. especially when the Admiral won;t come to them and explain himself. Adama requisitions both civilian ships to help in the search and all tillium shipments from the refining ship. Lee and Lampkin are discussing candidates for their emergency president; however, the ones most suited do not seem to want it, Lampkin becomes disheartened calling what they are doing an "exercise in futility" and at worst a false clean slate, and he destroys their list forcing Lee to re-write it.

Meanwhile the Admiral is consulting the Doc about how the President missing her treatments will effect her, the Doc informs him that "the sooner you get her back here the better her chances" and that he has found out some interesting information about the Cylon prisoner. Adama meets with Saul in his quarters and informs him that the Six is pregnant and that he knows that Saul is the father. The Admiral really lays into Saul about endangering the fleet due to his weaknesses. Saul retorts that he isn't the one endangering the fleet, Adama is, in his search for the President. Adama then brings up Ellen and the pair of them come to blows. During the fight, as you have probably come to expect by now, Adama's wooden ship is broken which leads to the classic line "Do you now how many times I've had to repair this thing?" and the two of them asking each other what they are going to do about their respective woman trouble.

We then see Athena in the brig humming some form of lullaby (considering the interesting use of music in the show lately, it probably means something).

The Admiral then orders Starbuck to send out the Raptors and civilian ships to begin searching new sectors of space. When Starbucl kwarns him that they do not have the ships or manpower to do this, and that her people will feel like they are being sent on suicide missions, the Admiral points out they aren't being asked and dismisses her. Whilst the Admiral is watching the pilots get ready for launch, Lampkin comes to see him, ostensibly to get him to sign some papers making the captains of the requisitioned ships free of blame should anything bad happen. Of course Lampkin isn't really there to do that[[he's mostly there to point out that the Admiral is "indulging a vain hope at the cost of lives" as he is missing "that is thing which is essential" (the translation of the episode title) and to try to persuade him that Zarek isn't such a bad President.

This leads to Bill admitting to Lee that he can't let Roslin go and has lost his objectivity and that he has decided to relinquish command immediately.

Whilst this is happening Lampkin is talking to his cat, Lance, deciding that they have been going about it the wrong way, instead of looking at people and seeing their faults he should be instead deciding what qualities they want and finding who fits the bill, when he does this there is only one choice... Lee Adama himself. He then heads out to find Lee and explains to him that they have found their candidate, him, and when Lee tells Romo that his name wasn't on the list, Romo says its what Lee "always wanted" and why Lee got him to help in the first place, tell him to "savour his victory" and pullisa gun on him. When Lee seems surprised at this Romo explains that Lee is perfect, he is a beacon of hope to the Colonials and that because they are a dying race, hope is the last thing they need and that they should come to accept their fate. Lee is understandably a little surprised at this and asks Romo why he thinks like this. Romo gives Lee his bag and tells him to open it if he wants to see why, inside is his cat, dead for weeks having been murdered. (This suggests that the cat we have seen throughout the episode isn't real, perhaps Romo is the final Cylon and is projecting? or possibly he's just nuts) Romo obviously has become a little unhinged by the death of his last link to his family and appears to be suffering from survivors guilt. Lee however manages to talk him round, pointing out that if a clean slate is a fallacy, and persuading him to put the gun down, Lampkin much put his past behind him and help him make a difference.

We then see Leeland Joseph Adama being sworn in as the President of the 12 Colonies of Kobol as the Admiral and Zarek look on.

The Admiral then steps down in favour of Saul, against Saul's protestations that last time he did a terrible job. Bill says that Saul is a different man now and that he's ready for the job, after all its not permanent. The Admiral's last orders are for Saul to find Earth and give Hera back to Athena.

As one of his first acts as president, Lee gives Lampkin a dog named Jake, when Lampkin protests that he hates dogs even more than he hates cats Lee describes it as a "perfect gift" and wishes Jake good luck.

Lee and Bill have a discussion about what they are doing next, we discover that Lee has kept Zarek on as his Vice-President and that Bill is going to get in a Raptor and stay behind while the fleet jump away in the hope that Roslin will eventually find the rendezvous. When Lee asks him why he's doing it Bill admits that he "can't live without her". Lee and Starbuck then see him off and he tells them to "keep the light on, I'll be back".

The episode then ends with Athena holding Hera and humming that same lullaby as she paces around the brig and the Admiral settling in to read Searider Falcon in his raptor as the fleet jumps away.

Lee "Apollo" Adama

Lee Adama is played by Jamie Bamber.

Overview

Lee aspires to do the right thing, often at any cost. He is a former Viper pilot and the son of Admiral Adama, Lee possesses thoughtful rationality and a strong code of ethics. He has served as the CAG on Galactica and as the Commander of the Battlestar Pegasus. He felt inspired to follow in his lawyer-grandfather's footsteps by joining the defense team at Gaius Baltar's trial. Fallout from this momentous decision led to his resignation from the military, he is now a civilian and serving on the Quorum of Twelve as the Caprica Delegate.

Kara "Starbuck" Thrace

Captain Kara Thrace is played by Katee Sackhoff.

Overview

Starbuck is a talented Viper pilot and is considered Galactica's best pilot, although she is also known for being an avid triad player and drinker. She is also know to be rebellious and has a tendency to mouth off to her superior officers. Commander Adama considers her to be a surrogate daughter.

Battlestar Galactica Season 2

14. Scattered Colonel Tigh takes over the command of the Galactica due to Adama's critical injuries. A Cylon attack forces the fleet to make an emergency jump. A miscalculation causes the Galactica to be separated from the rest of the fleet. On Kobol, Tyrol and Cally risk their lives to retrieve medicine for one of their wounded colleagues.	15. Valley of Darkness The Galactica successfully reunites with the fleet, but the Cylons are still onboard the ship. Col. Tigh orders Lee to stop the Centurions from reaching Aft Damage Control before they vent the atmosphere from the ship. On Cylon-occupied Caprica, Starbuck and Helo visit her old apartment. Helo takes note of the abstract paintings on the wall. On Kobol, Baltar has a nightmare about Adama. Tyrol and Cally go on a purported rescue mission.
16. Fragged Adama is still in surgery. Meanwhile, the men and women on Kobol are searching for a way out of their desperate situation. They discover that the Cylons have built an anti-aircraft battery, which is designed to destroy any rescue craft. Crashdown leads the group on a raid to destroy the weapon before their rescue ship can arrive. Back on Galactica President Roslin is experiencing withdrawal symptoms after being deprived of chamalla. Colonel Tigh is facing off against the Quorum of Twelve. Fed up with their interference, he declares martial law.	17. Resistance Martial law is having a bad effect on the fleet as ships are refusing to resupply Galactica. The Chief is arrested as a suspected Cylon, and it's up to Gaius Baltar to prove his innocence. The President, with the assistance of Lee Adama, escapes her imprisonment aboard Galactica and takes refuge on Cloud 9 with the help of the most unlikely of allies. Starbuck and Helo discover a group of fifty-three survivors on Caprica.
18. The Farm A week after last week's exciting episode , Adama returns to an excited CIC and retakes command of his ship. He orders a ship to ship search to find the President, but fails to find her before she sends out a message informing the other ships in the fleet that she knows where Earth is, and that she will lead them there. Over a third of the fleet leaves Galactica's protection and jumps back to Kobol to await the return of Starbuck.Back on Caprica Starbuck has been shot and is under medical care in a strange looking and sounding hospital.Caprica Boomer returns to Helo, and helps him lead a raid on the hospital where Starbuck is being held which leads to a chilling discovery.	19. Home (Part 1) President Roslin's fragile coalition is put to the test and Adama continues to struggle with the betrayal of his son. Starbuck, Helo, and Boomer return from Caprica and set out for Kobol to find the tomb of Athena.
20. Home (Part 2) Adama heads to Kobol to find Roslin, reassembles the fleet and heads down to Kobol himself with most of the key characters (Apollo, Starbuck, Zarek, Billy, Tyrol) to find the presidential party in search of the "tomb of Athena" which allegedly leads to Earth. The two groups meet, Adama and Roslin make their peace and continue on their expedition. Apollo hangs out with Starbuck , Zarek tries to keep his cronie off plotting with Boomer who is unaware of tension building between Helo and Tyrol. On arrival at the tomb, a showdown between Boomer, Adama (and Zarek's chum) occurs but the key characters of the group enter the tomb afterwards and find themselves transported to Earth.	21. Final Cut A reporter is sent to Galactica to chronicle the harsh realities of life during wartime. Lucy Lawless guest stars as the television reporter, D'Anna Biers.
22. Flight of the Phoenix Sharon informs Adama that the Galatica has been infected with a computer virus that is tampering with the basic ship functions and is scanning them for weaknesses. All this is preparation for a major assault by the Cylon Raiders. So with the clock ticking, Adama must pull himself together and decide whether or not she can be trusted. Meanwhile the flight crew is hard at work on a new fighter named The Blackbird.	23. Pegasus The Galactica crew is overjoyed when they encounter another Colonial battlestar, the Mercury-class Pegasus. The elation fades when Admiral Cain takes command of the fleet. The Galactica crew learn about the harsh practices onboard Pegasus. The tension boils over when Helo and Chief Tyrol learn about Lt. Thorne, the "Cylon Interrogator."
24. Resurrection Ship (Part 1) Kara arrives in the Blackbird with detailed photos of the mysterious Cylon ship. Despite the new truce between Adama and Cain, Roslin continues to see Admiral Cain as a dangerous threat, one that needs to be dealt with firmly.	25. Resurrection Ship (Part 2) The Galactica and Pegasus prepare for a joint attack on the Cylon Resurrection Ship. Adama assigns Kara a dangerous special mission. Lee says he will help Kara, but he may not have the will to fight, even to save his own life. Meanwhile, Cain assigns Col. Fisk to his own special mission onboard the Galactica.
26. Epiphanies As President Roslin nears death, Dr. Gaius Baltar must be groomed for the worst case scenario. Roslin orders the death of Sharon's unborn child. A sabotaged Viper leads to an investigation that uncovers a movement of people seeking peace with the Cylons. Baltar discovers an anomaly in the (Sharon's) fetus that may cure Roslin's cancer.	27. Black Market The new commander of the Pegasus, Jack Fisk, is murdered by black marketeers. Lee Adama is charged with solving the crime. Plot Summary

Whew, not easy to get started on this one; probably a lot of updates required! Better summary coming soon--we promise!

Cylons Revealed:
We got to witness the alliance of humans and Cylons take on a different form when the four 'embedded' Cylons were revealed: Saul, Sam, Tory and Galen. Reactions, of course, from the humans were varied. Adama was almost dealt a mortal blow upon learning about Saul, Kara was floored that her husband was Cylon, Galen just matter-of-factly went about his business. Tory was the only one who seemed to embrace her new "family," telling Roslin that she was 'done' taking orders from the captive President.

Hostages Released: Roslin, Gauis, Helo and the other hostages were returned by D'Anna after Lee and Kara shared their discovery that the Viper computer held the way to Earth. Lee had threatened to blow Sam, Saul and Galen out via he airlock, but Kara showed up to stop him just in the nick of time.

<SPOILER ALERT>

The Cylons and Humans agree to find Earth together based on the heading in Starbuck's mysterious viper. Upon the last jump, they come upon Earth and all are in in celebration.

The last scene of the episode shows a landing party entering the atmosphere, seemingly racing to the surface.

The next shot is of Adama holding a handful of ashen dirt being read by a Geiger counter going crazy.

The shot pulls out to Adama and Roslin standing next to each other as Roslin simply says "Earth." Camera then simply pans around to the distraught faces of Cylons and humans alike as they stand on what appears to be Earth in future......... A bombed out post-nuclear wasteland covered with ruins of buildings, bridges, and other structures.

Why I Would Have Voted for Baltar, Too

(This essay covers information up through the Season 2 Presidential election and is based only on the data available at that time.)

It's clear that I would have regretted it; that's a given. Just so there's no confusion, I'll say it à la Mr. Waturi (Joe vs. the Volcano): "I'm not arguing dat wit' you!" (The other part of the quote is also apt: "I know he can get the job…but can he do the job? I'm not arguing dat wit' you!")

But from any vantage point within or without, as audience member or imagining myself part of the Galacticaverse on any level with any amount of access, I would have cast my ballot for Baltar, and here's why….

First of all, imagining myself as the least-informed sort of civilian, not privy to any inside info, knowing only what has been made widely known about Roslin and Baltar, he's the clear choice, the sane choice. He's got the brilliant reputation and a pile of well-known recent saves-the-day achievements; he's a scientist rather than a mystic; his integrity is publicly unquestioned, and his record of service since the Cylon attacks paints him a loyal, patriotic, reliable, self-sacrificing man of the people.

Roslin, on the other hand, is an unapologetic religious fanatic, and they have no business being heads of state, even if they've happened to make a correct prediction or two. She chose Baltar as her VP, and so her combative competitiveness once they are opponents in the campaign has an air of disingenuousness about it; if he's as big a joke as she'd have the voters believe once he's her challenger, what faith are they to have in she who relied on him so heavily before?

His timing was also impossibly perfect in announcing his candidacy, as she left the opening for him to do so by issuing a very discomforting edict: the abortion ban. My own strong leanings on this issue in reality would make me resent her anyway, but Baltar's press conference disavowal of the decision would be compelling to many without any preconceived bias for or against abortion rights, because he argues subtly but convincingly that Roslin is attempting to impose a fascistic regime, and the remnants of humanity need to maintain their cultural identity rather than surrender what little they have left of their liberty and become little more than machines of their collective.

If I were part of that 'verse in a more connected fashion, aware of much that the ordinary citizen could not be, I would be even more vehemently opposed to Roslin's remaining in power, because that woman is like an eccentric has-been celebrity in our world; the more you learn, the scarier she becomes.

To begin with, she makes promises with a straight face and then instantly reneges as soon as she has gotten her way (see episodes "Flesh and Bone" and "Home, part I" for examples of this behavior).

But her actions in the episodes "Bastille Day," "Epiphanies," and "Sacrifice" may be the most damning example of the political calculations she makes in times of civil unrest. In all three plots, she dealt with terrorist actions among the humans, and the choices she made in each situation were so contradictory that they clearly reveal her motives to be based on maintaining public opinion more than anything else.

In "Epiphanies," the terrorist group is made up of utter lunatics who call themselves "Cylon sympathizers" and are willing to engage in violent, destructive acts of sabotage, endangering the entire fleet, in the hopes of winning the powers that be over to their plan of making peace with the Cylons and ultimately even reparations for decades of enslavement and intolerance. Roslin's benevolent response toward them is perplexing, as it does little to ensure the safety of the fleet, and it seems as though she is willing to forgive them their actions to date, despite the damage done. Even more bizarrely, she pledges to "hear them out" on their concerns, and "maybe even act" on them. There is no way we can take this promise seriously (even if she had a strong track record in the promise-keeping area), so we have to wonder what she thought would be their reaction when she failed to take them seriously at any point down the line.

In both "Bastille Day" and "Sacrifice," however, faced with similar situations, she takes the hard line and says flatly that her administration does not negotiate with terrorists. It's only because she's surrounded by dutiful military officers that no one thinks to contradict her on this claim. Clearly, she does negotiate with terrorists when it suits her, so there must be some reason why on these occasions she will not….

In all three cases, she is dealing with a group of human terrorists, so it's not a question of the sanctity of human life. In all these cases, the terrorists are a deadly threat to others, so it's not a question of stakes. The glaring difference between the situations is in the terrorists' demands.

The Cylon sympathizers have an agenda so ridiculous as to be politically harmless; no one will "see their point" or join their cause. By showing mercy to them, she can seem a magnanimous leader who values her subjects sufficiently that even when they stray from her path, she is willing to work toward bringing them back to the fold.

However, the insurgents in "Sacrifice" threaten to compromise the plausible deniability she maintains regarding State secrets, and their contention that the leaders of the fleet are influenced by a Cylon captive is not entirely unfounded. Therefore, their propaganda could be damaging to her political future; therefore, "we don't negotiate with terrorists."

It struck even closer to home for her when Tom Zarek took hostages and demanded her resignation as President so that elections could be held. Granted, that's unreasonable, but think of her reaction then to the compromise Lee offered Zarek, which successfully ended the terrorist activities aboard the Astral Queen. He very reasonably agreed to hold the election that would have occurred anyway under Colonial law in seven months' time, and she was incensed. Only Lee's impressive (and singular) ability to shame her by shining a light on her outrageous hypocrisy was sufficient to calm her down.

So clearly, the truth about Roslin's stance on terrorism is that we only negotiate when their faction's claims or proposals are so outlandish that we can feel confident they will be viewed as lunatics, not when they have any evidence of our own questionable actions backing their theories, and certainly not when their demands might threaten our power or influence.

That attitude of political expediency above all else, and the choice to use military force essentially to silence potentially damaging voices, are what make Roslin such an untrustworthy leader in the months leading up to the election. I would have voted for Baltar, too, even if I'd heard he talks to himself in empty corridors.

Boomer has been the Cylon poster child for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder since she first started to suspect her true identity!

Poor Boomer, designed and dispatched to form deep bonds with the humans of Galactica, and then betray them. Is it any wonder that of the three known female Cylon models, and all the incarnations of those three models, she would be the one distinct individual among them who would seek the companionship of the one Cylon who preaches that there is no God, no greater meaning to life, no responsibility, no soul?! She wants to believe as he does, because she's hurt and been hurt far too much to survive in a universe wherein one could be judged or redeemed for one's sins.

Now that it has been revealed, at least to a few, that Galen is a Cylon, could their long-ago relationship be rekindled...? Does Boomer have enough left within her to even try?
