It started with a kiss in the Galactica corridor. A kiss from a girl just happy to see the boy was still alive, that silly boy she'd made fun of a hundred years ago, earlier that day, before the world ended. Maybe she kissed him because of an errant thought during the battles and as she'd learned of the devastation all around them, a thought that went something like I should have been nicer to that poor boy who is probably dead now. Or hey, maybe it was more like, he was sort of adorable, and now I'll never see him again.

Whatever led her to do it, she planted her kiss on a truly adorable and naive young man who took it as seriously as if she'd asked him to the prom. Whether or not she intended to light such a spark is questionable, but he was captivated by her. He courted her for many months, devoting what little spare time the President's aide could possibly have to their chaste-seeming connection. There were bumps along the way, as their bosses butted heads, putting them at odds as they were forced to defend their superior's positions. Just when it seemed Dee might be losing her patience with their infrequent dates and turbulent interactions, they were once again united by disaster, when Cylon Centurions cornered them aboard Galactica, and they stood together in defense of the ship.

But this revival of their bond would not last long, as Dee started to see signs of interest from Lee, whom she clearly preferred. The very day that Billy proposed marriage to her, she went on her first date with Lee. Unfortunately, while she had declined Billy's proposal, she had failed to inform him that she was in fact not even seeing him exclusively anymore. He came upon her and Lee together in a bar, and he was deeply hurt by her betrayal.

Despite his pain and resentment, however, he was willing to put himself in harm's way to defend her, and he died that very night, protecting her from terrorists. It is probable that her sense of culpability for his death caused her sudden sense of desperation with regard to Lee from that moment forward. She looked at what happened as her having sacrificed Billy for Lee, and she needed the relationship with Lee to work out in order to make that sacrifice less horrible.
