Who he is:

Chief Galen Tyrol, played by Aaron Douglas, is the hard-working genius of the Galactica deck crew, King of the Knuckle-Draggers.

Why we love him:

From the beginning, in the miniseries, it was impossible not to fall in love with the Chief as he presented Commander Adama with the restored Viper he'd flown in during the first Cylon War. The pride and eagerness to please evident in his face and voice made it clear that he loved Adama like a father. That impression was only proven not long after when he met Lee Adama. Lee's disdain for his father provoked the closest thing to disrespect the Chief was probably capable of displaying toward a superior officer...at least back then.

Over the course of the series, the Chief has been through the wringer, even compared to the average character on BSG, which is saying a lot. He's tried to make the most of a lot of bad situations, despite the bad attitudes surrounding him. All the ships are in irretrievable disrepair? Chief Tyrol builds a new ship. Stranded on a planet with Cylons all around and a superior officer who is clearly out of his frakking mind? Chief Tyrol finds a way to quietly advise him without showing disrespect or encouraging mutiny.

Tyrol has had every rug pulled out from under him, every bulwark for his sanity demolished. He's still trying so hard to be the man he wants to be. That makes him a hero among heroes.

A Vancouver native, Aaron Douglas has appeared in many locally filmed productions, such as Stargate SG-1 (as two different characters), Smallville, and Jeremiah. On the big screen, he's been in such films as X-Men 2, Paycheck, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Saved!, and Catwoman.
